In Australia, a survey undertaken by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia in 2005 revealed that urban and regional (environmental) planning graduates had very strong job prospects. The job prospects for planners were as strong as graduates from medicine, veterinary sciences, dentistry, surveying, mining engineering and nursing.
Over the 5 year period to 2005 there was a 60% increase in the employment in planning and good prospects are predicted into the future.
Starting salaries for graduate planners were around AU$40,000 per annum in 2005. In the current climate where there is high demand it is not unreasonable to expect that salaries for planners with postgraduate qualifications and in management positions can reach AU$100,000. This clearly depends upon where the type of work, skills and specialisations of the individual planner.
